What we collect

  • The first name and written side each partner enters in a room.
  • The feedback Both Sides writes for that room.
  • A one-way scrambled version of your IP address, used only to limit how many rooms one person can start each day. It is discarded after about a day.
  • If you use the contact form: your message, plus a name and email only if you add them.

To use a room, we don't ask for an email, phone number, or account. We don't use ads, third-party analytics, or tracking cookies. We keep daily counts, such as how many rooms were started and finished, with nothing that identifies you or what you wrote.

One cookie remembers whether this browser has used its free room and how many paid rooms it has left. It holds a random id and nothing else.

How it's protected

Each room gets a random key that lives only in the two room links, after the # sign. Browsers don't send that part of a link to any server unless the page sends it on purpose. Our server uses the key to encrypt names, sides, and feedback before storing them, and stored rooms can't be read without the key. Anyone who has one of your links can open the room, so share your partner's link only with your partner.

How long it's kept

Each partner's written side is erased as soon as the feedback is ready. The names and feedback stay until the room expires 3 days later. Either partner can delete the room at any time, which erases it for both. Unfinished rooms expire 3 days after they were created.

Talking instead of typing

The Talk button uses the speech recognition built into your browser. In Chrome and Edge, your browser sends your voice to Google or Microsoft to turn it into text. In Safari, Apple handles it. Both Sides never receives your audio, only the text that ends up in the box. If you'd rather not use that service, type instead.

Who processes it

To write the feedback, both sides are sent to Anthropic's Claude API. Anthropic handles API data under its own commercial terms and privacy policy, which you can read at anthropic.com/legal. Rooms are stored with Upstash, and the site runs on Vercel. Payments are handled by Stripe. We never see or store your card details.

Terms of use

  • You must be 18 or older.
  • Both Sides is not therapy, counseling, medical advice, or crisis support. The feedback is written by AI and can be wrong. Use your own judgment.
  • Don't use Both Sides if you're afraid of your partner or anyone is being hurt or threatened. Call 911 in an emergency, or the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233.
  • Only write about your own relationship, and only invite the partner you're writing about.
  • Paid rooms are a one-time purchase with no subscription. If a room you paid for fails to give feedback, the room is returned to you automatically.
  • The service is provided as is, without guarantees, and may change or stop during testing.
